Information Technology – or IT for short - has earned its rightful place. When the US government opened the World Wide Web to the public, it was just a question of time before the field of information technology would come about. And it has been a most fascinating academic endeavour for both young and old alike.

Technology is developing way too fast, and innovation fuels the minds of everyone involved in delivering products and services that relate to information technology. Ten years ago, IT jobs were rather limited and specialised in scope; today, it just about embraces anything related to technology platforms and Web infrastructure and architecture.

When you’re looking for IT jobs, you have to know your priorities:

Do you like to work for a company that has a good record of pay and benefits? Are you interested in only the top IT payers of the country?

Or do you put more emphasis on training? You know that IT skills – like technology – become obsolete skills overnight so there is a constant need to upgrade your knowledge and skills;

Perhaps you’re attracted to a company that relies heavily on innovation? Innovation is a worthwhile pursuit because with the onset of newer technologies, problems are likely to be part of the IT landscape, so by innovating, a company can find solutions – temporary or permanent – that are cost effective for their clients.

And then you may be interested to work for companies that put a high premium on promotion and development. Why not? Your efforts and talents should be rewarded in some way, and given the scarcity of IT talents, you’d like to think that IT companies will do anything to keep you in their camp

IT Jobs: Skills

IT jobs will appeal to you if you’ve always liked tinkering with computers – taking them apart and putting them back together again. They will also appeal to people who are intrigued by industrial computers and sophisticated software programs. Individuals who have a soft spot for telecommunications infrastructure and architecture and information management systems will thrive in an IT environment.

These days, however, IT jobs not only will count on your technical savvy but also on your ability to communicate needs and parameters to your target market. You must be able to translate specific elements of technology into each company’s unique requirements, because different companies have different IT set-ups.
